![]() ![]() This is less AR and more VR than what you may be trying to achieve, but it seemed like the shortest path to a usable interface. Basically like Compiz's 3D Cube, but inside and spherical, with head tracking. Of course that would require a lot more processing power, especially to reduce latency. You could also do the Leap Motion / Kinect type of camera configuration to have your hands as input. ![]() It might even be possible with a device like this, since it doesn't need the LCD panel, to also be able to track depth of fingers/stylus relative to the pad, maybe using an array of cheap infrared cameras, or instead provide tactile feedback, being able to change the shape of it so you can feel and press buttons.Īnother alternative head tracker, would be to do what the Wii remote does (reverse optical tracking), and have cameras attached to the HMD, this would make AR easier. Tablets seem to be where everything is going, like the Wii U for example. Sort of like having an iPad but being able to place/hang apps in 3D space around you. This way you can use this pad to grab, move and interact with windows and then also use it to type with. What I would like to see as an input device for a VR desktop is a 3d tracked touch pad with a stylus, which in VR/AR would be like a tablet. If you could get full accurate 6 axis tracking, you could move your head closer to windows when reading text, but with only rotation it will be hard to see text and something like the Hydra would not make up for it because it is a little clunky to use when you want to click buttons and move windows and type. And it is not just resolution that factors in to that, it is also a matter of head tracking. But the developer/kickstarter version I think could only be used for testing and development. I think the commercial version of the Oculus Rift could potentially work with a VR desktop. ![]()
